Meet the Coach: Danny Graystone, Australia

Name:  Danny Graystone

Job:Head coach at South Adelaide Panthers, National Premier League, Australia.

Previous jobs: Managing director at Premier Academy for Soccer Skills (Australia). Football In The Community Officer, Macclesfield Town.

Playing career: Stoke City (youth), Crewe Alexandra (youth), Harpenden Town, Witton Albion, Abbey Hey, Winsford United, South Adelaide Panthers (Australia), Cumberland United (Australia).

Dream job: Manchester City coach

Strangest place coached:During my A-Licence assessment in Singapore, we had to coach at a public venue. Our pitch was surrounded by at least 200 people doing early morning yoga. Trying to make myself heard over a tannoy booming across the stadium at 7am was a challenge.

Wenger or Mourinho?:  Mourinho

Nil-nil draw or 3-4 defeat?: Nil-nil draw. Points count.

Best player coached: Zema Abbey (ex-Norwich City)

Worst player coached (or worst type of player): Goalkeepers – they live in a world of their own.

First thing you do in your first session with a new team: Firstly, a players’ meeting introducing the coaching staff, the annual training plan, the team’s playing philosophy, and the expectations and goals for the forthcoming season. Players are involved in the goal-setting process, and leaders within the playing group will no doubt start to emerge.

Depending on the time of the year, and assuming it’s the first day of pre-season, I would split the players into groups for small-sided games with the assistant coaches, finishing off with some light fitness drills. If I joined the club mid-season I would go straight into the preparation for the next fixture.

Career ambition: To coach in the World Cup.

One thing you’d change about football: More money into the grassroots, and less money at the top.

Tell us about one of your craziest situations:  While undertaking my A-Licence in Singapore I was recommended a hotel by the Singapore FA which was a five-minute walk to the course venue. Upon arriving it quickly became clear the hotel was actually the local brothel, with the bottom four floors rented out on an hourly basis. Despite knocks on the door at all hours of the morning, I managed to stay focused and passed with flying colours!
